Once again, my 10:30 client decided to sleep in or get breakfast or do something other than come in and get some counselling. Since this is not the same client who bailed on me last week, I can only conclude that 10:30 AM is much too early for a college student to be scheduled for an appointment, be that counselling or otherwise.
So. Last night, Chris and I went to see 'New in Town'. And before you judge me for going to see a schtick-y Renee Zellwegger film, let me remind you that the movie was set in New Ulm, Minnesota. I couldn't resist watching C-list actors speak in the nasally, overly-Norweigan tone they think sounds like the Minnesotan accent. I also couldn't resist the long, sweeping shots of the frozen tundra that is my home state's winter wonderland.
Anyway, about 30 minutes into the movie, the film faded, the lights came on, and a muted 'weeeoooo, weeeeeooooo' noise started up. Then, an eerily composed, recorded British voice was heard, saying "A situation has arisen. We need to evacuate the building now. A situation has arisen. We need to evacuate the building now. A situation..."
It was the calmest alarm I've ever heard. Everyone sort of shuffled out of the theater. When we got out and onto the street, there were a bunch of fire trucks. I was mildly disappointed. A plain old fire alarm? I was half expecting some sort of terrorist activity, a bomb scare, or King Kong climbing up the side of the theater. Chris and I had a pint of Stella in the pub across the street while everything was sorted out, then returned to our movie, which was unmemorable.
So, are you guys reading anything interesting (apart from this blog--hey-o!)? I'm reading a few books, and NONE of them are in any way related to class. I'm reading a book about Freud's idea of "everyday psychopathology", and a book called 'Lying on the Couch', which is a novel about therapy from the perspectives of both the therapist and the client, but neither are related to what I'm doing in class. I'm also just starting a book called 'The Tao of Pooh', which is a sort of whimsical comparison of Winnie the Pooh to the principles of Taoism, which I know practically nothing about at the moment. I've heard that this book is required reading in a lot of college courses, and people have said some really great things about it, so I'm looking forward to reading more.
One more quick thing: You may or may not know that it has been my goal to write a children's book for quite some time. Well, I've decided that this could easily become one of those things that just slips through the cracks, so I'm going to actually make an effort to do this and see what happens. So far, I have joined a local writer's group, and will be doing some research into how people generally go about this.
And now that I've written this, it's official to me, and I need to do it!
Alright, I've got a banana to eat. Take care and have a great day!
