Week One of Socialism

Hey! I have heard from some friends that people are actually reading this blog--so pressure's definitely on. Thanks for reading! I do have a question, maybe I should post this in the comments section, but is the Catherine who has so nicely left a couple of comments my aunt Cathy? Hmm...

With that out of the way, I will say that I've been here for a week and I am loving it. Right now, it still feels like I'm on vacation, in that I'm not working or going to school and have been basically wasting a ton of time and having a lot of fun. When I actually start classes again, it will probably click that this is my new life, and then I'll probably have some more mixed feelings...maybe. I don't know, I'm very content just now.

Last night, a bunch of Chris' friends met up for drinks, dinner and clubbing. We went to a little restaurant called the Butterfly and the Pig. It was really nice to meet more of his friends and we had a great dinner in this restaurant that is in the lower level of a building. There were about 15 of us and I had a lot of fun. As a lot of you know, I'm such a sucker for accents and to be surrounded by a variety of them is like a tiny slice of heaven for me.
**Side note: people here have better names than we do in the states. For example, last night I met a girl named Eithne (pronounced Ethna--it's Irish), and there is also a guy names Ieuan (pronounced Yay-un--it's Welsh). But I digress.**

After dinner, we stayed around and had some drinks at the bar, and at some point, one of Chris' friends asked how long I would be in Scotland, and when I told him I would be here for at least a year, he said, "Well then, welcome home." It was really, really sweet. After awhile, we went to this club and danced. It was nice, and it made me think of a small First Ave where everyone has accents and the music is from the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

Hmm, what else? I got my first piece of mail here. It was from my grandma and grandpa, and it was a card saying, basically, "If you're reading this, it means you've arrived safe and sound." So nice.

One more thing, and then I'll stop. I was in the grocery store the other day and noticed that food here, even with the bad monetary conversion rate, is very inexpensive, especially common or staple items. Chris said that when something is really popular, stores find a way to make it very cheap so that everyone can afford it. God bless Socialism.

Well, this weekend Chris and I are going to visit his sister and her boyfriend in Dunfermline, then going on to stay with his parents in Montrose and will return on Monday. Have a good weekend and I'll speak to you soon!
xoxo
